Measurement locations

Since 2014, TNO has been carrying out wind measurements at various locations in the North Sea with LiDAR systems. The aim of these measurements is to make multi-year measurement data publicly available to developers and interested parties to accelerate wind energy developments in the North Sea, in line with the Dutch objectives for Offshore Wind. This provides insight into the wind conditions in the North Sea.

Lichteiland Goeree (LEG)

On a distance of about 30 km south-west from Hoek van Holland, a platform called Lichteiland Goeree is situated. The coordinates of the platform are: 51°56′ NB, 3°40′ OL. The platform serves as a beacon for ships on the North sea and is also used for meteorological measurements by KNMI and Rijkswaterstaat (RWS).

Europlatform (EPL)

On a distance of about 50 km south-west from Hoek van Holland a platform called Europlatform is situated. The coordinates of the platform are: 51°60′ NB, 3°16′ OL. The platform serves as a beacon for ships on the North Sea and is also used for meteorological measurements and wave measurements by KNMI and Rijkswaterstaat (RWS).

K13A

The K13A is an offshore production platform located 100 kilometers from the Netherlands in the Southern North Sea. The coordinates of the platform are: 53°13'NB, 3°13'OL . The K13-A serves as a link between the production platforms J6 and the K6 and the other WGT pipeline operators.

L2-FA-1

The L2-FA-1 offshore platform owned by NAM B.V. is located north of the Frisian Islands, 80 kilometers from the coast. The coordinates of the platform are: 53°58′ NB, 4°30′ OL. The platform serves as a production platform for natural gas.

Meteomast IJmuiden (MMIJ)

In the past, TNO has also carried out a measurement program on a met mast that was built by RWE in the autumn of 2011. This met mast was built at 40 nautical miles off the coast west of IJmuiden. Sensors have been mounted at various heights to detect and record wind speed, wind direction, temperature and pressure differences.

Offshore wind park Egmond aan Zee (OWEZ)

The Egmond aan Zee wind farm was the first big wind farm to be built in the North Sea off the Dutch coast. The farm comprises 36 wind turbines, each with a capacity of 3 MW. Together they will supply enough renewable electricity for more than 100,000 households.
